Marian devotion is deeply woven into the spiritual life of many Filipinos. From daily rosaries to grand celebrations of Flores de Mayo, the love and reverence for Mama Mary are evident in countless expressions of faith throughout the country. Popular local pilgrimage destinations like Our Lady of Manaoag in Pangasinan and Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga draw millions each year, offering places of prayer, thanksgiving, and miracles.

But for many faithful, this devotion extends far beyond the Philippines. Pilgrimages to international Marian shrines offer an opportunity for deeper spiritual renewal and a broader connection to the global Catholic community.

And if you’re one of the few who are blessed to embark on a spiritual journey abroad, preparation is key to a more enriching experience. Understanding things you need to #KnowBeforeYouGo like what to expect, when to visit, and how to observe local customs will make your journey even more meaningful and spiritually fulfilling.

Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France, it is believed that Lourdes is where the Blessed Virgin appeared to a young girl, St. Bernadette Soubirous, in 1858. The sanctuary draws millions of pilgrims yearly, many of whom seek healing through the spring water from the Grotto of Massabielle.

Best time to visit: April to October, especially during the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11 or the international pilgrimage days in August
