Across the world, there are countless transcendent travel moments. Observing the endemic lemurs of Madagascar. Sharing a meal with the Dumagat people. Marveling at the grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum.

There are so many things to experience but we need to remember that tourism not only involves us but also the communities we visit and interact with. That is why it is important to be a responsible traveler— and make your travel a rewarding experience for you, the places you visit and its inhabitants.

Below, we list down some of the things to remember for your next journeys.

Honor your host community and its heritage

According to the World Tourism Organization, a responsible traveler should respect local customs and traditions. This helps you connect with the local community and creates more authentic connections. One should also listen to the stories of the locals to give you a more nuanced understanding of their realities. Remember to respect the destination and never mock their traditions or deface their honored monuments.

Support the locals

As tourism is an integral source of livelihood for many people, it is important that we support local artisans and businesses. Get local guides and visit less frequented areas. Remember though to not support souvenirs made from endangered animals and plants.

Be an informed traveler

Apart from researching the basics of your destination, try to expand your horizon and look for tour operators that highlight communities and those who champion environmental policies. Be wary too of activities that take advantage of children and wildlife.

Respect the wildlife

Any activity that alters the natural behavior of an animal is considered unethical. For example, riding elephants should be frowned upon as well as poking at dolphins and whales to trigger an action. Instead you can try volunteering wherein you can help conserve wildlife just like the existing elephant conservation efforts in Sri Lanka.

Lower your environmental impact

Although the travel industry contributes to global emissions, it is still integral to the lives of millions of people across the globe. That is why travelers are encouraged to minimize their impacts when they arrive at their destination. This can be done by finding alternative modes of transport as well as reducing waste and energy consumption. One can also go for less populated destinations or support eco-friendly establishments. These things build up to make your travels more meaningful and impactful.

Hopefully these tips can help you become a responsible traveler. The goal is to empower you so you can also empower the communities you visit. Travel, afterall, is about sharing experiences and making connections with others. And what better way to do that than knowing your responsibilities while creating a better world for all.
